Chiran Town, located in Kagoshima Kagoshima PrefectureKyushu Island, has long been acclaimed as “Little Kyoto in Satsuma” (former name of Kagoshima Pref.). A group of samurai residences from the Edo period beautifully line the streets. Chiran Town is also an enthusiastic proponent of peace as it was where the base of “Kamikaze Tokko-tai” (suicide squad) was located on the farthest south of the mainland Japan during the war. Chiran Samurai Residence GardenWithin the town there is a preserved samurai district with houses and gardens that date back about 250 years. Seven gardens attached to samurai residences are open to the public. With the rock walls and hedges of the residences and the forested hillsides in the distance, the area emanates a sublimely historic Prefecture on the southern end of the atmosphere which lets visitors feel as if they are on a time travel to Edo-period Japan.Chiran Peace MuseumThe Chiran Peace Museum preserves documents, letters and belongings pertaining to the unprecedented “Tokko” operation, also known as “Kamigaze.” Towards the end of World War 2, the Japanese armed forces resorted to suicide attacks, in which pilots would deliberately fly their planes into enemy warships. Remembering those who lost their lives serving as members of Tokko-tai, visitors can learn about them and reconfirm the importance of peace. Tea field of Chiran-cha tea7638Chiran Town
