Asakura, a town situated in the middle of Fukuoka PrefecturePreserved District of Traditional Townscape in Akizuki About seven kilometers to the north from the downtown of the city, can be found the preserved district of traditional townscape. The district is called Akizuki and still retains the nostalgic Edo-period townscape at the foot of Mount Kosho. This is the only example in Japan Fukuoka Prefecture and 60% covered with a landscape of mountains and forests, is the source of two main waterways. The neighborhood of Akizuki, known as the “Little Kyoto of Chikuzen” (the region’s former name), lies in a valley encircled by mountains on all sides, and during Japan’s Warring States era (16th century), it thrived as a castle town. Tourists from all over the country come to see the history and rich natural surroundings here.
