The Tago Family served the castle master for eleven generations and made a large contribution to the town’s development. The digni■ed main gate still remains today. Steam Locomotive “Yamaguchi”Due to the modernization of the national railway system in the 1960s, most of the steam locomotives in Japan were abolished and the one in Tsuwano was no exception. It was last seen in Tsuwano in 1973, however, a number of steam locomotive fans and local people made great e■orts in support of its recommencement and achieved their hopes in 1979. Today, the steam locomotive runs for about 63 km between Shin Yamaguchi Station and Tsuwano Station, taking about two hours. There is a real steam locomotive engine displayed in front of Tsuwano Station making it a popular photo spot. Tsuwano Catholic Church & Otome Toge St. Mary’s ChapelAn authentic Western-style Gothic church in the historical part of town built in 1892. It burned down in 1931 but was rebuilt the following year. Inside, a Japanese-style tatami ■oor and gorgeous stained glass windows welcome visitors. Tsuwano is also known as a place of martydom. Hundreds of Hidden Christians were captured and sent to Tsuwano in the late 19th century as Christianity was still banned in Japan then. One of them witnessed Marian Apparition.
