From ancient times and throughout Hyogo PrefectureSasayama Castle Ruins and Oshoin Built in 1609 by Ieyasu Tokugawa, the castle was completed after just six months. It stood for 335 years until it was destroyed in a fire in 1944, but after fifty years, the Oshoin (large reception room) was restored in 2000 CE. Today, Sasayama Castle's distinct building style and stately decorations recreate the atmosphere of the past.Tamba MomenCrops of high-quality cotton began to thrive here during the early 18th century; people would hand-spin the cotton the Middle Ages, Buddhist culture and agriculture have been the core of livelihood for the people of Tambasasayama. After the Civil War period, in the 15th century, the area prospered as a castle town; in 1609 Sasayama Castle was built by order of the first shogun, Ieyasu Tokugawa. Having grown to a great scale, Tambasasayama thrived as a center of politics, economy and culture for the wider Tamba region. Nowadays, a number of specialty products are produced from the area's rich natural resources and prized for their superior tastes. Among them are Tamba Sasayama Beef, Tamba Kuro-mame (black soybeans), rice, Matsutake mushrooms, chestnuts, and tea.balls into thread and weave it into fabric, which would clothe the entire household. Now, the momen weaving has been designated as a "traditional handcraft of Hyogo Prefecture" and is also celebrated as a "rare traditional craft."
