Iga is situated right in the middle of the Mie PrefectureIga Ueno CastleIga Ueno Castle was built by Takatora Todo who was regarded as the master castle builder at the time. The stone wall of the castle is one of the tallest walls in Japan (30 meters high). The main castle Iga Basin, surrounded by mountains in the northwest part of Mie Prefecture. The town prospered once as a castle town set out neatly in a grid in the Edo period (1600-1868), and the town still shows an atmosphere of those days. Iga Ueno is well known for being the birthplace of Iga Ninja, a group of Ninja known throughout the world for their Iga style Ninja skills (Ninja martial arts). Moreover, the area is the birth place of Basho Matsuo, a wondering poet who traveled all around Japan and left travel diaries and an array of great haiku poems. tower was rebuilt in 1935, but inside of wooden building leaves the atmosphere of the period of the 16th century. The three-tiered castle keep exhibit armors and body armors related to Todo Family. Forty-six calligraphy works are displayed on the ceiling of top story, including ones written by Taikan Yokoyama, the world-famous Japanese painter.
