Ashikaga was the home of the Ashikaga Tochigi PrefectureShogunate (14th-16th century). Here, nostalgic stone-paved streets, Banna-ji Temple, the Ashikaga Clan’s family temple, whose main hall is a National Treasure, Kurita Museum with its internationally acclaimed collection of Imari and Nabeshima ceramic wares and Ashikaga Flower Park full of seasonal beauty can all be enjoyed. The Watarase river runs serenely through the city and mountains create an expanse of green. Ashikaga is a city of both natural and historical appeal and thus is called the Little Kyoto of Eastern Japan.Banna-ji TempleThe second family head of the Gensei Ashikaga Clan, Yoshikane, established a Buddhist temple hall in his premises and enshrined the statue of Dainichi Nyorai in 1196. Later, the third generation Clan who established the Muromachi family head, Yoshiuji, constructed temple halls on the site and developed it as the clan’s main temple. The vast property of approx. 40,000 m2, has an almost square shape and is surrounded by earthen walls and moats. This is one of the typical examples of a samurai warrior class residential building from the Kamakura period. The temple was designated as a national historic site in 1922 as the Old Residence of the Ashikaga Clan.
